Time for July’s Spotify playlist, featuring some of my most-played songs from the past month. Feel free to share what you’ve been listening to lately in the comments!
Features this month:
After seeing her in Cleveland a few years back, and having several friends who are huge fans, I started listening to Tristen on a regular basis. When I heard a new album was coming out this year, I got excited. Once I listened I was blown away. Her 2013 album, Caves, is excellent—but Sneaker Waves shows amazing growth and I’ve gotta say, she’s going to be one to watch.
I won’t lie, I’ve been a huge Ben Gibbard fan since I was in middle school listening to Death Cab for Cutie and my mother questioned why a band would have such a morbid name that I would insist on wearing across a t-shirt.
I’m also a huge fan of Teenage Fanclub, who wrote the original album Bandwagonesque, which Gibbard re-imagines on this release from Turntable Kitchen… which clearly, Gibbard really loves. You can tell because a lot of the covers don’t really make many revisions on the original. He said in an interview with NPR:
“Bandwagonesque is my favorite record by my favorite band of all time,” Gibbard writes via email. “It came along at a pivotal time in my musical life, and I’ve loved it for over 25 years. It’s been such a blast taking these songs apart to see how they work and then putting them back together again.”
-Benjamin Gibbard, interview with Stephen Thompson at NPR, July 13, 2017
This record has received mixed reviews, but as a diehard Pedro the Lion fan, this record feels like an amazing early Christmas gift.
Pedro the Lion’s David Bazan formed Lo Tom with T.W. Walsh on guitar and Trey Many and Jason Martin of Starflyer 59. I’m happy to report that this new project sees Bazan return to straight-ahead guitar rock, something I have missed since Pedro days.
“Overboard” reminds me of Winners Never Quit, and if you don’t know what I’m talking about—I’d recommend checking it out.
